Today we went to a haiku class at the Yonabaru community center. The woman we’re staying with, Miyuki-san, helps conduct these classes and has traveled all over the world studying haiku. So here’s what I wrote today:
となき しま
うみわ しあわせ
なにも いない
“Life goes on. Fuck it.”
No regrets, no funeral.
“Let’s eat a sandwich.”
お-はな さく
そして はる わく
お-そくたつ
あかに なる
なつ ばかな がか
やけてる よ
Tonaki Island
The ocean is lucky/perfect/totally satisfying
Nothing stays
Flowers flower
Then spring springs
Special delivery
All is becoming red
Summer is a stupid painter
You’re getting sunburned, yo
I also had a hell of a time trying to explain to the class in Japanese the meaning of this haiku I wrote for my high school French class about an old train yard in my neighborhood, the future site of Curtis Park Village:
Beauté et magique
Champs de gaspillage toxique
Perdu rêves et plombe
Beauty and magic
Field of toxic waste
Lost dreams and lead
I will let Jojo update with his own haikus tomorrow!

Those are all fucking radical!
Hayaku haiku

Is that a lyric of Tonaki song?
sounds a little bit funny!!
Thank you for the birthday message!! So happy to hear from you and also happy that you have enjoyed Okinawa life!!
No, not a lyric of the Tonaki song… yet! Maybe we need to walk out on a seawall in the dark again and re-record it.
Do you have Kinjo-san’s email address? We would like to hang out with you guys again during our last month here!
When I am not lurking on craigslist haiku hotel…
Sonically I
Listen to quiet hum of
refrigerator
Overcast shadows
Clouds passing by slowly
It is not raining today
Pear and cherry trees
Blossoms drift fluttering to
My car windshield
PS nice tie in to CP toxic waste site…was that Monsieur Robbins class? I had that goofy Mormon!
Thanks. I had that goofy Mormon for two years too, and continued Allan’s tradition of trying to make him uncomfortable by doing all paired skits as a lesbian couple.
That one was for M. Henson, however.
