Here’s a rad Okinawan artist I’ve discovered recently, Wataru Kousaka. He’s a sanshin player who mixes traditional Okinawan, Indonesian and Indian influences with synthy electro compositions. I got one of his CDs at Get Happy Records in Naha, just because the title is so good: electropic plantation mix: drum ‘n’ sanshin & disco dub & asian lounge.

If you check out his MySpace page, there’s videos of him performing with a gamelan gender, a bronze xylophone with bamboo resonators. Yay gamelan!

“Brown Rice Juice”

“Saigon Rock” (includes electro gamelan samples)

(In other news, peace out! We’re going fishing up north for the weekend.)

Shishimai video is amazing. Did you notice he’s performing in Venice?
Does Jono know this?
