Mexican-style Wrestlers and American-style Rock March 16, 2010

Last week I went to the Okinawa Prefectural Museum of Art with Jojo’s parents to see this locally famous rock’n’roll drummer perform. There was a long lecture beforehand in indistinguishable Japanese, and for some reason these Okinawan Mexican wrestler guys were there.

From left to right, there appears to be: Traditional Rower Man, Pineapple Man, Weasel Man, and Okinawa Soba Noodle Man. I wish I could tell you more.

So this guy Eiichi Miyanaga — or Chibi — is the drummer for the best-known Okinawan rock band, Murasaki. He’s also a taiko drummer, but for this performance he was on a standard Western drum kit (though with two kicks), playing along with a recorded track of some classical music.

Here’s his latest recording, “One Summer Dream,” with Ayano Honjo:
